Grand Junction's 125th Anniversary
Be a part of the celebration this summer as Grand Junction celebrates its 125th birthday! Founded in 1882 by George
Crawford, Grand Junction has been through over a century of expansion and change: From Crawford's land purchase
in 1882 to the first beet sugar refinery in 1899 to today's Riverside Parkway Project.
Events are scheduled to commence June 29 and continue through July 4, including a parade, historic walking tours, youth activities, movies, music in Lincoln Park, and much more - something for everyone!
The City of Grand Junction is constructing a Web site for the
occasion; keep an eye on www.GJ125.com for development of further details and activities on this big event. Volunteers
are always needed and very much appreciated; contact the City for more information on becoming a Birthday Volunteer.
Grand Junction by 1900 had evolved from a simple frontier town to a small city with advantages normally only found in much larger communities.
This set the pattern that continues. The 1900 Federal Census recorded a Grand Junction population of 3,503, a 72.6 percent gain over the previous decade.
1900's TRANSPORTATION
An electrically powered streetcar system
was inaugurated May 27, l909 by the Grand Junction and Grand River Valley Railway. When few people owned automobiles, streetcars were a great convenience for many riders. Streetcars were smooth, quiet, nonpolluting transportation. Earlier, the city had horse drawn streetcars 1890-1903. (...go back)
